Make The Mat App part of your winter survival tool kit. Support your overall wellbeing with Pilates and maintain your practice through winter.

We are fortunate in Australia that our winters are milder and shorter than in the Northern hemisphere. Nevertheless, grey skies, less sunshine and daylight hours combined with cold, damp conditions leave most of us wanting to snuggle on the couch with a cuppa rather than doing a class on The Mat App.

Why we must keep moving

Winter is naturally a time for doing less and slowing down. However, our bodies produce less serotonin and melatonin from the lack of sunlight, affecting sleep and mood. Keeping our bodies moving through winter Pilates practice is essential for our immune function to fight colds and flu, maintain the pelvic area and muscle strength and prevent the winter blues.

Women’s health in winter

We have to work a bit harder to look after ourselves over winter. Our bodies naturally feel stiff and less mobile, and we’re more inclined to hunch and clench when cold. Combining this with inactivity (less opportunity for outdoor exercise and incidental movement) can create unfavourable postural changes and aches and pains.

Our mental well-being can suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder symptoms. Our diet changes with a tendency to eat more carbohydrate-rich foods because fewer fresh fruit and vegetable choices are available, leaving us feeling sluggish.

Cold weather affects pelvic health

Slower blood flow to muscles naturally occurs when it’s cold. Sitting on cold surfaces and inactivity worsens this and can make the pelvic floor function less effective in securing your pelvic organs in position and supporting your spine. If you get a cold or flu, coughing, sneezing and blowing your nose can also weaken the pelvic floor.
